Book description

Playalore, the play spirit of the dwarfs, makes them laugh and skip, frolic and tease, tumble and bumble. When Mr Miserly uses a magic potion to banish her away, the dwarfs lose their merriment and work hard, harder, hardest, in Mr Miserly's gold mine. This makes Mr Miserly very happy, but the elves and all the other creatures of the forest and fields become sad and lonesome. It takes the special skill of the Elfin Queen Mother, together with the great efforts of Mr Miserly's cat and all the other creatures, to find Playalore again. When they do, she returns to the dwarfs. This breaks the magic spell and the dwarfs regain their merriment.

This first title, Playalore, launches The Cat Series, a number of stories written for 6 to 9 year olds.

REVIEWS

I read this book to my children, both girls aged 7 and 6 years old. Being girls, as well as cat owners, they loved the fact that the story was narrated by Mr Miserly’s cat.  They both loved the beautiful sketches and the muted colours of the book cover, these aspects added to the quirkiness of the story. The story is both original and mystical, my girls love stories about ‘the little people’ so were entranced as the tale unfolded. I would recommend this book for children of this age as they could easily read the story themselves, the writing is big enough, the chapters are short enough, the sketches keep their interest and the vocabulary is varied enough to aid progression whilst allowing understanding. The story is magical and fantastical however it also promotes important messages such as looking after our planet, keeping it clean and healthy. I found that my girls had grasped this issue when we discussed the story. I asked my children what was their favourite part of the story and they answered ‘the songs in the middle’ these were a few songs that the ‘little folk’ sang, whilst reading I made up a tune and we all sang the songs .. they loved that. I would highly recommend this book .. maybe as a stocking filler!!
