In THE BARREL DOGS Tom Cat and the elfin girls set out on a journey into The South Side. To get there, they cross the magical wetlands and then the dark pine forest. Both of these present them with some rather tricky problems. But once across the border they meet up with Mrs Muck’s son, Bert, and his children Abby and Keanu. Together they travel to Mrs Muck’s house where the elves spend the summer. One day, however, they come across a poor unfortunate dog tied to a barrel. They also meet his cruel master, Mr Farmer. The elves use their magic powers to teach Mr Farmer a lesson. But will he learn?

Author’s note

In this book, we meet up again with many characters from the earlier books, think of the creatures from The North Side, the spiders from The Return of the Sun, Abbey and Keanu from To The South Side, etc. The first half of The Barrel Dogs happens in The North Side, the home of the elves and Tom Cat. The North Side is a magical area somewhere on the mainland of Europe. The second half brings us back to The South Side, where Abbey and Keanu, and their dog Geezer live. This, in fact, is the area of the southeastern Peloponnese, a region in the southwest of mainland Greece. It is where I came across the barrel dogs as described in this book.

As in all books, I must say that Pooja came up trumps again with her wonderful images and book layout. It’s a huge pleasure to work with her.
