BOOK DESCRIPTION

To The South Side tells the adventures of Mr Miserly's cat during a walkabout to The South Side. There he comes across Shadowman, who brings the Christmas tree decorations in Abby and Keanu's house to life. Through Abby and Keanu, the cat meets their grandmother, Mrs Muck. Mrs Muck is a very neat and tidy person who simply has to be put into her place by the monstrous It who lives in the ant Queendom down below. Eventually, on his way back to The North Side, the cat hears the Creation Story as told by an ancient spider.

An internet fact sheet and a spider's dictionary compliment the second and third stories respectively.
This second book in The Cat Series contains three stories written for 6 to 9 year olds.

REVIEWS

I have two girls aged 7 and 6 years, I read this book to them straight after we had read Leni Hurley’s first book in the cat series, ‘Playalore’. My children really enjoyed this book. The book actually consists of 3 stories. All three stories were lovely and held my children’s interest. Our favourite, unanimously, was The Sun Spirit. This is a great story as it introduces children to the solar system, the milky way and the earths place in it all. As in Playalore the mystical aspect of the story really carried them along and the lovely sketches added to it. There was a dedicated dictionary at the end of the story, which was a fabulous idea as there were some new words for my children. I found it was great to play a game by asking them what a certain word meant and then to compare their meaning with that of the dictionary. At one point we ended up in a discussion about all the things we need the sun for (heat, growth etc etc). I would highly recommend this book for 5 to 9 year olds as it can easily be read by the older ones but it is also a lovely book to read to children at bedtime. I’m sure my children will be rereading these stories at a later date!
